Wisdom Storage
Read Proverbs 6
Keep their words always in your heart. Tie them around your neck. When you walk, their counsel will lead you. When you sleep, they will protect you. When you wake up, they will advise you.
Proverbs 6:21-22
A popular female humorist, Erma Bombeck, titled one of her books, Family: The Ties that Bind . . . and Gag. How often the words our parents spoke to us in our childhood find their way into our lives, applying just enough pressure to remind us of their timelessness. Regardless of our family experience, the wisdom of the more experienced has girded us throughout our lives. Whether it was a trusted teacher growing up, a godly grandparent in our young adulthood, or a colleague in our first job, most of us have gleaned guidance from others.
Proverbs is just such a collection. It serves as a permanent document of godly wisdom. Were these words written in today’s culture, the author might suggest entering words of wisdom in our PDAs or planners—whatever paints a picture of a constant companion. God is able to remind us of the wisdom garnered from others in our moments of need. The words we have stored in our minds and memories can serve to lead, protect, and advise us day by day.
A WORD FOR TODAY
Wisdom is worth thinking about . . . any time.
Today, Lord, I am grateful for those who have influenced my life. Remind me of their wisdom and ways when I need it.
