Slavery To Salary

Read Proverbs 11

No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Matthew 6:24

How do we serve money? Workaholism, bondage to debt, living above our means, the “I have to have it” attitude––these are all signs that point to a faulty system of priorities. These behaviors enslave us to money because they consume all our thoughts and time.

Jesus asked some hard questions of the people who desired to follow him. Jesus told one wealthy man to give all his possessions away before becoming a follower (Matthew 19:21-22). Sadly, the man ended up walking away. Jesus knew the man loved money more than he loved God.

If we want the Lord to be first in our life, we first must examine our attitudes. Are we working and living for money or for God?

Money is a harsh slave master.

Father, help me to examine my perspective. May my life be dedicated to you and not to making money.
