Read Proverbs 9

“Stolen water is refreshing; food eaten in secret tastes the best!” But little do they know that the dead are there. Her guests are in the depths of the grave.

Proverbs 9:17-18

There are those who find delight in taking culinary risks and those who prefer to find their thrills elsewhere. Daredevil eaters crave the delicacies of a hole-in-the-wall eatery or a dive cafe, notwithstanding that there are certain inherent risks one must recognize—for salmonella is no respecter of persons. This proverb employs a similar backdrop whereby people frequent a promising cafe filled with tempting fare. However, the dining area is strangely empty—eerie evidence that something is wrong.

Sin’s “menu” is always tempting—refreshing and secretly delightful. In the world of food, presentation is everything. Compromise is served in bite-sized pieces—no one can stop with just one bite. Adultery is garnished with petite lies carved to look like roses. And greed is served on tap. However, what is not on the menu is what one must beware of. Former guests have died from their naivete. Take note of those whose sinful indulgences have led to ruin.
