Read Proverbs 8
How happy I was with the world he created; how I rejoiced with the human family!
Proverbs 8:31
This proverb presents wisdom come to life—a personality filled with emotion and self-will. Scholars believe personifying wisdom in this way provides a unique background for understanding Christ himself as the very wisdom of God.
Though not necessarily a direct description of Christ, the point of this proverb is to show wisdom rejoicing in our favored status with God as his creation. Wisdom is on our side. Sadly, many people are convinced that practicing God’s laws and adhering to wisdom is just the opposite. They believe wisdom takes all the fun out of life. They say wisdom is reserved for stone-faced monks and mountaintop monasteries; it certainly is not practical for life in the real world. Yet Scripture reminds us that wisdom was an integral part of this real world’s very beginnings. In this sense, wisdom was created for human happiness and is the creator of happiness itself. The entire human family and the world in which we live spring forth from this truth.
A WORD FOR TODAY
Joy is a trait of wisdom.
Today, Lord, I realize you have given me wisdom for my own happiness. Help me to practice wisdom today.
