Read Proverbs 18

The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?

Proverbs 18:14

Although believers are privy to supernatural experience, we are not superhuman. While we dwell on this earth, we will get mud on our shoes and rain on our heads. We may become well acquainted with illness, disease, calamity, and catastrophe. Through all this, God can infuse the human spirit with courage to bear up through whatever earthly trials come our way. Though we may reach the depths of depression, we can endure because of the hope of Christ.

However, the Bible teaches that the ultimate sadness is the devastation of a crushed spirit apart from Christ. God infuses the spirit with life; sin bears down on the spirit with ever-increasing pressure, crushing it with hopelessness. These broken lives pass us in the aisles of grocery stores and stand in line beside us at the theater. They are a reminder that we are unable to save ourselves from the hopelessness of life without Christ. Whatever believers may experience, we can endure because of Christ. However, no one can bear up alone under a life with no hope.
