Lesson On Loyalty

Read Proverbs 17

A friend is always loyal, and a brother is born to help in time of need.

Proverbs 17:17

We can choose our friends, but not our families. A less touted observation is the Bible’s reminder against cafeteria-style loyalties with friends or family members. We don’t have the option to pick and choose which friends or family members we will be loyal to at which times. When families run into hard times, Proverbs boasts that the idea of the family unit was birthed for just such a purpose. Similarly, true friends are not only loyal; they are always loyal in their intent. Going the second mile is second nature to the believer. If a friend or family member is in need, a believer does whatever is possible to meet that need.

Why such an emphasis on loyalty? Christian relationships—friendships or marriages or families—are to model Christ’s own relationship with believers as a witness to the world. In fact, the Bible emphasizes that the world will take note of our loyalty or lack thereof. How well we demonstrate our willingness to honor a commitment to family or friends is a strong testimony for or against the legitimacy of the Christian faith.

Be a loyal sister or brother.

Today, Lord, I am aware of friends and family members with whom I have struggled. Motivate me to work on my commitments as a testimony to your grace.
