Priceless Soul

Read Proverbs 19

What do you benefit if you gain the whole world but lose your own soul? Is anything worth more than your soul?

Matthew 16:26

How many people gain a promotion only to lose their principles along the way? How many business tycoons focus their mental energies on gaining material fortune only to lose their families due to neglect? As pitiful as these stories are, Jesus points to a more frightening proposition. It is possible to gain everything this life has to offer and yet lose our souls. We risk losing the only thing we take with us from this life into the next: our soul. Jesus proves the point of his proverb in the form of a question—not a mandate. No one can answer for us—we each must answer his inquiry for ourselves.

What will we benefit from our earthly gains? When we are caught up in a materialistic moment, we can lose sight of what really matters in light of eternity. Jesus reminds us that preparedness is essential when it pertains to eternal life.

Why would you trade a priceless gift for anything less?

Today, Lord, many things will attempt to draw my focus away from what really matters. Steady my gaze and tighten my grip.
