Good Neighbors

Read Proverbs 14

It is a sin to belittle one’s neighbor; blessed are those who help the poor.

Proverbs 14:21

If this proverb referenced only our literal neighbors, some of us would be hard pressed to find a financially challenged one in the bunch. We can broaden the principle revealed in the proverb by considering anyone in a poor, pitiful situation to be “one’s neighbor.” Ironically, the poorest “neighbors” of all can include those who may be substantially wealthy, yet without a friend in the world. They find themselves at the top, yet in the unenviable position of loneliness. Our “neighbors” are those who have gone through a messy divorce, bankruptcy, or other public humiliation and suddenly find their social circle has shrunk significantly. Those whom the world finds easiest to belittle—perhaps in fear of becoming like them and sharing their fate—are our neighbors.

The Bible reminds us that it is wrong to ride with the tide of public opinion when it belittles those in need. Instead, we are called to help our neighbor by offering friendship and the reassurance of support. We are commanded to welcome those “survivors” whom society has “voted off the island.” In fact, we are to consider them as close as . . . neighbors.

We can always find need among our neighbors.

Today, Lord, keep my eyes fixed on those from whom I’d rather turn away. Move me to help them however I can.
