Real Treasure

Read Proverbs 15

Better to have little, with fear for the LORD, than to have great treasure and inner turmoil.

Proverbs 15:16

Imagine being offered a luxurious townhome filled with all the comforts and conveniences money can buy. It is the ultimate townhome in terms of finery and decor. There is only one stipulation: The quarters must be shared with one, modest-sized elephant. That’s all—the zenith of luxury living offered in exchange for enduring a gigantic problem.

The reality of this ridiculous illustration is no exaggeration for some folks. Some people have the freedom to buy anything their hearts desire, yet they are confined by mammoth-sized grief, divorced families, spoiled children who haven’t spoken to them in years, so-called friends who use them for position, or impatient lawyers bringing bad news. For them, that fleeting but terrifying feeling just before retiring at night is that the weight of their growing grief may one day trample them. Meanwhile, the God-fearing family with comparably little material wealth sleeps soundly in their beds. The Bible teaches that God’s awesome presence is a believer’s true treasure.
