Read Proverbs 22

Just as the rich rule the poor, so the borrower is servant to the lender.

Proverbs 22:7

Analogy is a favorite tool of Proverbs. Comparing two items demonstrates the relationship between them. In this case, the rich rule the poor because of the balance of power. Their relationship is dependent upon the concept of supply and demand. The rich have what the poor need. In the same way, this proverb exposes the balance of power between a lender and a borrower. A servant is dependent upon another in the same way borrowers become dependent upon a bank or other lender. Whether or not we should borrow money is not at issue.

This truth simply emphasizes the seriousness of such a move. The comparison is a vivid picture of our commitment to repaying our debt. Though we may enjoy the benefit of a loan, the balance of power remains in the lender’s hands. We ought to fully understand the dependent relationship that is created whenever we borrow money. Understanding is the first step to applying what the Bible teaches about integrity and money.
