Read Proverbs 23
Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment.
Proverbs 23:23
When spiritual hunger strikes, we have options. We can starve, we can bargain-hunt in earthly resources, or we can turn to God for what we need. Too often, we are tempted to go to the convenience store of earthly resources instead of God’s Word. We pick up a bargain brand of humanism in place of God’s truth. Instead of scriptural self-discipline, we take home the latest self-help CD. We would rather skim a horoscope than whisper a prayer for wisdom.
In contrast, Proverbs is a shopper’s paradise—a wealth of resources at our fingertips. We can pick up exactly what we need: a handy answer to that nagging problem, a bit of advice concerning a family member. This particular proverb contains a shopping list of the essentials for Christlike living. They are a saint’s staples—a farmer’s market of fundamentals—as if they were called out by a hungry soul to a hastening shopper: “While you’re out, get Truth. Also get Wisdom if you see it. Discipline. And one more thing: Good judgment.” We can make a meal out of these goods that will truly satisfy our soul.
A WORD FOR TODAY
We sell the truth when we ignore it.
Today, Lord, thank you for the resources you have given me in Scripture. Help me to turn to your Word for my daily needs.
