Read Proverbs 7

Her house is the road to the grave. Her bedroom is the den of death.

Proverbs 7:27

Today’s verse is a familiar warning to the reader of Proverbs: Stay away from sexual sin because it is one of the mileage markers on the road to spiritual defeat. Sexual sin, like lying, never shows up alone in a person’s life. You cannot participate in it without participating in many other forms of sin. Adultery is usually accompanied by lies and deceit. It is also a selfish act that involves the breaking of your marriage vows and a disregard for the well-being of your children.

But this knowledge can also lead to a misunderstanding. Because warnings against sexual sin are so frequent in Scripture, Christians often treat sex and sexuality as if they are particularly offensive to God, rather than a wonderful gift from him when used as he intended. It is only when the gift is used as God did not intend that it becomes sin. (That is true of all of God’s gifts.) God is a generous God who bestows upon us many precious gifts, but using any of them inappropriately is sin, and “the wages of [any] sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

Sin always leads toward death.

Today, Lord, help me to confess my every sin, no matter how small, that I may be holy as you are holy.
