A Sister’s Wisdom

Read Proverbs 7

Love wisdom like a sister; make insight a beloved member of your family. Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman, from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman.

Proverbs 7:4-5

Whether biological or spiritual, our sisters and other family members remain in a unique position in our lives. When we are blinded by our temptations, they can step in and say, “Open your eyes. You don’t want that.” While often painful, our family’s honesty may help us to wake up. This honesty directly confronts the seductive lies of our temptations.

In this same way, wisdom acts as a sister, guarding us from our temptations. Wisdom and insight lose their effectiveness, however, when we stubbornly refuse to listen. Notice the wording: We must “let them protect” us. To overcome temptation, we must first be willing to listen. Wisdom, like our family members, often reveals to us that which we are unable to see. When we are willing to listen, God’s wisdom will guide us along the correct path.
