The Lord, Our Safety
The Lord, Our Safety
I love you, LORD;
you are my strength.
The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.
I called on the LORD, who is worthy of praise,
and he saved me from my enemies.
Psalm 18:1-3
Most of us don’t depend on a fortress to protect us, much less a shield or a rock. But for David, such places of safety were often very important factors in his survival. When Saul’s army was pursuing him, David hid behind rocks; but he reminded himself that the Lord was his true Rock—a sure defense against his enemies. He also hid in fortresses; but he reminded himself that God was his true fortress. David also used his shield to withstand the blows of his enemies; but he reminded himself that God was his true, impenetrable shield.
