The Lord Is A Trustworthy Ally

The Lord Is a Trustworthy Ally

Praise the LORD, who is my rock.

He trains my hands for war

and gives my fingers skill for battle.

He is my loving ally and my fortress,

my tower of safety, my rescuer.

He is my shield, and I take refuge in him.

He makes the nations submit to me.

O LORD, what are human beings that you should notice them,

mere mortals that you should think about them?

Psalm 144:1-3

When a nation is considering going into battle against a formidable enemy, it sends diplomats to its allies to solicit support. No one wants to go into battle without someone to back them up. In this prayer, David proclaimed the Lord God as his ally. He called God his “rock,” “fortress,” “loving ally,” “rescuer,” and “shield.” He thanked the Lord for training him in the skills needed in combat. In the confusion of the battlefield, David could rely on God to help him triumph over his enemies. Yet, he still marveled at God’s willingness to come to his rescue. “O Lord, what are human beings that you should notice them?”

When have you needed God as an ally? Today, thank him for the times he has rescued you.

  • Dear Lord, thank you for being my loving ally and my fortress . . .
