Longing For God’s Word

Longing for God’s Word

Your laws are wonderful.

No wonder I obey them!

The teaching of your word gives light,

so even the simple can understand.

I pant with expectation,

longing for your commands.

Come and show me your mercy,

as you do for all who love your name.

Guide my steps by your word,

so I will not be overcome by evil.

Psalm 119:129-133

There are times in life when we long for guidance. We want someone who can clearly see the road ahead to guide us—to show us where the pitfalls and dead ends are. This is the type of longing that the psalmist had for God’s Word. He yearned for God’s Word to guide his every step, for he knew that it would lead him to true joy. “Your laws are wonderful. No wonder I obey them!” he exclaimed. In today’s world, it is easier to imagine longing for God’s freedom than for his commands. But the psalmist understood that God’s commands give true joy in life.

Reaffirm your desire for God’s Word to guide your life. Pray that God might help you resist a specific sin that often overcomes you.

  • Dear Lord, I long for your commands. Guide my steps by your Word . . .
