THE PROWLER
Read Romans 6:11-14.
Doug sat up in bed with a start. The floor was creaking downstairs. Maybe he was just imagining things. Then he heard drawers opening and closing. Doug was scared now. He tiptoed across the hall and knocked on his parents’ bedroom door. “Dad!” he whispered.
Dad opened the bedroom door. “Doug! It’s the middle of the night,” Dad began.
Doug replied, “I heard a prowler.” Just then there was the sound of a door opening.
“Stay here,” Dad cautioned, “and I’ll investigate.” Slowly he sneaked down the stairs. The outside door was open, so Dad tiptoed outside. He saw a shadow by the tree. Someone was walking away with a brown bag in his hand. Dad went after him, caught him, and then led him into the house and up the stairs.
“Doug, here’s your prowler,” Dad said. “Your brother, Randy, has been walking in his sleep. Go to bed now.”
“I can’t believe I could walk in my sleep last night and not know what I was doing,” Randy said the next morning.
“You did,” laughed Doug. “You looked funny. You were walking barefoot carrying a lunch.”
“That’s right,” Dad said. “I guess you were on your way to school. You know, sinners are like sleepwalkers. They go through the motions of living, but they’re dead in their sins, unaware that they face eternal death without Christ. Going through the motions in the dark doesn’t give eternal life. Only Christ, the Light, can do that. We must wake everyone up with the truth!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you go through the motions of being a Christian—being good, attending church, praying, reading your Bible—without trusting Christ as your Savior? Going through the motions won’t save you from your sins, but accepting Christ will.
