The Little Toe
THE LITTLE TOE
Read 1 Corinthians 12:20-27.
Jana sighed as she sat down at the table one morning. “I wish I could do something important for the special services at church,” she said. “Carlos and Jack are going to play a trumpet duet; and Melanie, Sherri, and Tara are singing a trio. Holly’s playing the piano one evening, and Bonnie was asked to read her poem. Everybody’s doing something but me.”
“I thought you were helping in the nursery,” said Mom.
“I always do that,” said Jana, “but I’d like to do something really important.”
Jana’s older sister, Tracy, limped into the room. “How’s the toe you hurt yesterday?” asked Mom.
“Much better,” reported Tracy. “Before long, I’ll be able to walk normally. I never realized before how important a little toe is!”
“Did you look at your little toes this morning, Jana?” Mom asked.
“Probably not,” laughed Jana.
“Did you comb your hair?” asked Mom. “Did you look at your face?”
“Sure,” said Jana. “What are you getting at, Mom?”
“Well,” said Mom, “I’m just trying to point out that although we normally pay more attention to some parts of our body, like our hair and our face, every part is important. Even our little toes. Every member of the body of Christ—that is, every believer—is important too. We tend to pay more attention to those who play instruments or sing or speak. But those who work in the nursery or sweep the church or pray as they sit quietly in their seats are just as important.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you feel unimportant? Some jobs seem more glamorous to us than others, but God won’t reward you according to how glamorous your task is. He’ll reward you according to how faithfully you perform the task He has given you to do.
TO MEMORIZE:
Some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.
