No Sneaking In

NO SNEAKING IN

Read John 10:1-10.

“Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved.” As Mr. Batos, Jonny’s Sunday school teacher, read the words of Jesus, Jonny was puzzled. He wondered how Jesus could be a gate.

That night Jonny stayed at Tony’s house so he’d be ready to leave on a camping trip early the next morning. After they had gone to bed, Jonny realized that he had forgotten his fishing gear. “Let’s run to my house and get it,” he said.

“Everybody will be sleeping,” said Tony.

“We’ll sneak in,” said Jonny. “Come on.”

Jonny tried the doors at his house, but they were all locked. He decided to pry the screen off his bedroom window and enter that way. The noise woke his parents, so his dad grabbed a bat and went to investigate. Jonny had one foot in the window when his dad yelled, “Stop, or I’ll let you have it!”

Jonny froze. “Don’t! It’s me, Dad!” he said.

His father flicked on a light. “Jonny? Why are you sneaking in the window? Why didn’t you come to the door?” he asked. “I would have let you in.”

Jonny gulped.

The next morning the boys told Mr. Batos about their adventure. “I didn’t think it mattered how I got in,” Jonny said, “but it did.”

“That’s a good example of why Jesus is called ‘the gate.’ It’s only through Him that we enter heaven. Some people think they can sneak into heaven by doing good works, attending church, or being baptized. But the only way to enter heaven is by the gate—by accepting Jesus as your Savior.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you trying to sneak into heaven? You can’t do it. The only way to get into heaven is through Jesus Christ.

TO MEMORIZE:

Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.
