THE HOSE WITH HOLES (PART 2)
Read Romans 7:15-19, 23-25.
One evening after Philip had accepted Jesus as Savior, his dad found him on the couch in the living room, frowning. “What’s wrong?” asked Dad.
Philip looked up and sighed. “Well, I thought that after I accepted Jesus, I would have a new nature,” he explained. “But I still do wrong things. Why do I still sin?”
Dad thought for a moment. “I have to wash the car again. We can talk while we work.” Once outside Dad said, “Here,” handing Philip the hose. “Hook it up.”
When Philip turned the water on he yelled, “Dad, this is the same old hose! Did you think it was the new one?”
Dad smiled. “Not exactly,” he admitted, watching the familiar fountain display of the leaky old hose. “I want you to understand why a Christian can still sin. Even though we bought a new hose, it’s still possible to try using the old one. In the same way it’s possible for a Christian to turn back to his old sin nature. When that happens, we need to admit our sin to God and turn from it. We’ll have to fight our old nature until we get to heaven.”
Philip sighed. “It sounds like a lot of work to me.”
Dad nodded. “Sometimes it is,” he agreed, “but we can ask the Lord to help us daily. And just as I’m going to get rid of this hose, someday we’ll get rid of our old sinful natures—for good!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you wonder why you still have a problem with sin even though you’re a Christian? It’s because your old nature still wants to be in control. Trust Jesus daily to help you live for Him.
TO MEMORIZE:
Our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.
