JUST IN TIME
Read Ecclesiastes 12:1-5.
Gavin pulled a brightly colored paper from his pocket. What’s this? he wondered. It was a coupon for a free candy bar. He had cut it out of the newspaper and then forgotten about it. Eager to get the candy, he hurried to the store, picked up the candy bar, and handed the coupon to the sales clerk.
The clerk smiled at Gavin and looked at the coupon. “Oh, you made it just in time,” she said. “It expires tomorrow.” Gavin was relieved.
On the way home, Gavin decided to stop at his aunt Carrie’s house. He told her about the almost-expired coupon.
“Why don’t you sit down and have some lemonade with me?” As she handed him a glass, she said, “Your experience reminds me of something else that we can have for free, but it also has an expiration date.”
“What’s that?” asked Gavin.
“Salvation,” Aunt Carrie answered. “God’s gift of eternal life is free to those who accept it, because Jesus paid the price by dying for our sins.”
“I know that,” answered Gavin. “But what about the expiration date? I never heard about that before.”
“It’s the day your life on earth ends,” said Aunt Carrie. “God gives us a whole lifetime to accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. But once this earthly life is over, the free offer of eternal life expires.”
“I’m glad I have already accepted God’s free gift of salvation,” said Gavin with a smile.
“Me too,” said Aunt Carrie. “It’s good to become a Christian when you’re young.”
