The Hero
THE HERO
Read John 13:13-17.
“Did you see Galdino hit that last ball?” asked Chan as his father started the car. “It went so far I bet the other team hasn’t found it yet! I want to be just like him when I get to high school.”
“Me, too! Galdino’s the best player we have,” Chan’s friend Travis continued the hero worship.
“Can we stop at this next restaurant, Dad?” asked Chan. “The team’s going to eat here.”
The three of them were just starting to enjoy their food when the team came into the restaurant. Chan and Travis were delighted when Galdino and three other players took a table near their booth. But as the boys watched, they saw the team members—led by Galdino—blow the paper from their straws onto the floor, throw food at the busboy, and shout rudely until the coach threatened to send them out to the bus. They heard Galdino swear and saw him laugh at the waitress. Chan and Travis felt sad that their hero’s behavior was not something to admire.
As the boys returned to the car Chan said, “I don’t like Galdino anymore. How can such a neat ballplayer be such a rotten person?”
“You can admire Galdino’s athletic ability,” Dad said. “But it’s not a good idea to make people into idols. Sooner or later they let you down. Jesus is the one you should choose for your role model. He’ll never let you down.”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Has a sports figure you admire been found guilty of taking drugs? Does a television personality you like use bad language and brag about an immoral lifestyle? Beware of making people into idols. Only Jesus is perfect. Choose Him for your hero.

Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.
