ROSES AND ROOTS
Read Colossians 2:1-7.
“Can I go play at Cesar’s house?” asked Julio.
Mom looked up from the book she was reading. “Is your Sunday school lesson done?” she asked. Julio nodded. “Say your verse then.”
“Aw, Mom,” protested Julio, but he went to his room to learn the verse. After a while he came back. “I know the verse now, but I don’t understand it.” Julio recited Colossians 2:7.
Just then Julio’s little sister, Carmen, came in. “My rose died!” she cried. She led her mother out to the flower bed. Julio followed. Carmen pointed to a wilted rose sticking out of the ground. “I picked that rose and planted it.”
“Oh, honey,” replied Mom, “when you pick roses, they don’t have roots and can’t grow.”
Mom looked at Julio. “Plants need to be rooted in the soil so they can take in food and water. And we, as Christians, need to be rooted in the Lord. As we study His Word and pray and learn more about Him, we’re taking in spiritual food. And we’re developing strong roots so that when troubles come we can stand and grow.”
“That’s what my verse means, huh?” Julio said. “And the last part of it means I should be thankful for everything God does—like giving me a mother who makes me study my lesson before I play!”
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you take advantage of opportunities to be rooted in the Lord? Do you study your Bible? Listen in church? Take time to pray? You need to do those things. You need to be firmly rooted and established in your faith in Christ.
TO MEMORIZE:
Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.
Colossians 2:7
