Silver Dollar

SILVER DOLLAR

Read 1 Corinthians 3:11-15.

“Sorry—maybe next time.” Jolene hung up the phone and said to Mom, “The junior choir is giving a Christmas program at the nursing home today. Mrs. Wilson wants me to play the piano, but I have shopping to do.”

“Couldn’t you play and still have time to shop?” Mom asked. “Playing would be a real service to the Lord.”

“No, Mom!” Jolene put on her jacket and went to the mall with a friend and her friend’s mother.

When she came back home later, Jolene not only had two gifts, but a stuffed dog for herself. She giggled. “This is Orville. He cost only a dollar. I didn’t have any money left, so I used the silver dollar Aunt Jo sent me.”

Mom was shocked. “I thought you knew that coin was worth more than a dollar!”

“Well, yeah,” Jolene admitted.

The following Saturday Jolene and her mother passed a coin shop and saw several silver dollars, each worth a lot of money. Jolene said, “Now I wish I still had my coin.”

“It’s spent, and you may as well forget it,” answered Mom. “The day you spent your dollar was the same day you refused to play at the nursing home. You know, honey, your life is like a coin—you can spend your time any way you want to, but you can spend it only once. You need to make sure you spend it wisely.”

Jolene nodded. “I didn’t spend either my dollar or my time wisely that day, did I? I’m going to rename Orville. I’ll call him Silver Dollar, and he’ll remind me that I need to be careful how I spend my money and my time.”
