MARY’S PART
Read Luke 1:26-33, 46-49.
Shelly waited to hear the teacher call her name. She knew she was the perfect one to take the part of Mary, the mother of Jesus. No one could memorize the lines as well as she could. And her mother was the best seamstress in the church. She could have the best costume.
“Julie,” said Mr. Roberts, “I think you would be a good Mary.”
Shelly gasped! Julie missed church half the time, and she stammered. What kind of Mary would she be? Shelly thought to herself. Who wants to be in a dumb old play, anyway! When Mr. Roberts offered her another part, she made excuses and refused to be in the program.
Shelly sat in the front row the night of the program. She wanted to see how embarrassed Mr. Roberts would be for making such a foolish choice! Shelly watched Julie walk up front wearing a very drab outfit.
Slowly Julie began reciting from Luke. “For he . . . took notice of . . . his lowly . . . servant girl. . . .”
Lowly, grumbled Shelly to herself. That sure fits Julie. Then suddenly it struck her that Mr. Roberts was right! Julie was a good Mary! Julie was humble and stood in awe before God like Mary did—a servant willing to obey and carry out His commands. Shelly knew she would have exalted herself, but Julie brought glory to Jesus.
While the program continued, Shelly quietly asked God to forgive her proud spirit and make her His humble servant.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Do you think you’re better than some people? Do you think you’re more talented? Do you think you should always be the one chosen to play special music, answer the questions, or lead in prayer because you do it best? Jesus wants obedient servants who will help others and bring glory to Him.
