Closer To The Light
CLOSER TO THE LIGHT
Read Psalm 119:129-135.
Brian and his family went to visit his aunt and uncle on the farm. Brian loved seeing the animals, climbing on haystacks, swinging on the rope in the barn, and wading in the creek. “This is a neat place!” he said at supper one evening.
Mom smiled. “I’m glad you can enjoy yourself without ballparks or ice cream stores!”
After supper, Dad looked over at Brian. “Your uncle Mark and I have a surprise for you, Son. We thought you might enjoy camping out in the woods with us tonight.”
Three hours later, they sat by the campfire. “Time for devotions,” Uncle Mark announced, pulling out his Bible.
As Brian reached in his duffel bag for his own Bible, he looked at all the stars. “Wow,” he cried. “We can’t see this many stars at home. They must be a lot closer here.”
Dad and Uncle Mark laughed. “No, the stars aren’t closer,” Dad replied. “But we’re out in the country, away from city lights, which tend to blot out the smaller lights of the stars.”
Uncle Mark leafed through his Bible. “Just as the lights of the city blot out the stars, so the busyness of everyday activities can make it hard to see how God is working in our lives. That’s why it’s good to go to a quiet place—a place where you can be alone and think about God’s Word and His love.”
Brian listened very carefully as Uncle Mark read from the Bible.
HOW ABOUT YOU?
Is your time so filled with activities that you hardly ever think about God or the Bible? Be careful! If you don’t set aside “quiet times” to be alone with God, you’ll miss many of the wonderful blessings the Lord has planned for you.
TO MEMORIZE:
After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone.
