Remodeling Time

REMODELING TIME

Read James 1:2-4, 9-12.

The storm howled as Mr. Gordon stuffed an old towel under the door. “That should keep the water from leaking in,” he said.

“I wish it wasn’t raining,” sighed Anne. “I wanted to go shopping.”

“And I wanted to go down to the video arcade,” scowled her brother, Timothy.

“Well,” said Mom, “at least the storm is keeping us together as a family for an evening.” At that moment there was a flash of lightning, followed by a sharp cracking sound. An instant later, an earsplitting crash!

Everyone hurried to the kitchen. They saw a tree branch poking through a big hole in the ceiling. Water was pouring over everything. “Let’s run to the neighbor’s house,” Dad said.

Soon the family was huddled in the Taylors’ living room. Mrs. Taylor fixed them some hot chocolate. “What a terrible night,” Anne moaned.

“Don’t feel bad,” Dad said. “No one was hurt, and we have insurance.” He grinned at Mom. “And we’ll get the kitchen remodeled!”

Mom smiled back. She said, “You know, I think God sometimes lets troubles come so He can do some remodeling on us.”

“When I heard that crash, it scared me,” Anne said. “I thought, What if the roof caves in and I die? I know I’m saved, but I sure haven’t been living for God. It really makes you think.”

“Yeah,” Tim agreed. “I think I’ll appreciate our family more. It even sounds good now to spend a quiet evening home together.”
