Holy Holly

HOLY HOLLY

Read Colossians 4:2-6.

“I know I should keep inviting McKenzie to Sunday school,” Holly told her mother as they walked across the parking lot. “But I don’t want to anymore. Sometimes she swears at me or hits me. But the worst thing is that she always says, ‘Holy Holly. Ho! Ho! Ho!’ when she sees me. I hate that!”

When they were almost to the grocery store, Holly asked if she could run ahead. “I’ll wait for you just inside the door,” she promised.

“Oh,” said Mom. “I’m surprised you want to go into the store.”

“Why?” asked Holly in surprise.

“The door is in the way,” Mom pointed out.

Holly eyed her mother suspiciously. “The door swings open by itself—almost like magic!”

“But how do you know it’s going to open? Electric doors can fail,” persisted Mom.

“They never have before,” replied Holly.

“Aha!” Mom chuckled. “It sounds to me like someone has more faith in that store to keep its door in working order than in an all-powerful God to open doors He tells her to go through.”

“What do you mean by that?” asked Holly.

“Just that if God wants you to do something, He’ll make a way!” replied Mom. “He’ll ‘open the door’ to make it possible. Holly, we both know God wants you to keep reaching out to McKenzie, don’t we?”

“You’re right, Mom,” admitted Holly. “I know I should keep trying and that God will help me if I do. And I guess ‘Holy Holly’ isn’t such a bad name after all!”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you discouraged and ready to give up doing something God wants you to do? Don’t quit. Pray about it and trust God to open doors at just the right time.

TO MEMORIZE:

Pray for us, too, that God will give us many opportunities to speak about his mysterious plan concerning Christ. That is why I am here in chains.
