Experienced Comforter

EXPERIENCED COMFORTER

Read 2 Corinthians 1:3-7.

“Mom!” called Jaimee loudly. “Mason isn’t helping me. Why should I have to pick up all the toys by myself?”

Mom found Mason sitting on the floor, breathing hard. “Jaimee, look at your brother! The dust must have triggered his asthma,” Mom said with concern. “Go lie down, Mason, and I’ll give you your medicine.”

“Oh, Mom,” complained Jaimee. “Mason gets out of everything just because he has asthma. It’s not fair!”

“I know it seems that way at times,” Mom said, “but it isn’t his fault.”

A few days later Jaimee developed a bad cough and a high fever. “It’s bronchitis,” the doctor said. “I’ll prescribe some medicine, and you’ll need lots of rest.”

Jaimee stayed inside for several days. She didn’t like the medicine, and she missed her friends. Worst of all, it was hard to breathe. She had to sleep propped up on pillows the way Mason often slept. Imagine feeling like this as often as he does, Jaimee thought. She closed her eyes and prayed—for herself and for Mason.

Finally Jaimee went back to school. At the end of the first day she told her mother, “It sure is great to be feeling good again.”

“I imagine you’re eager to go out and play with your friends,” said Mom with a smile.

But Jaimee hung up her coat instead. “I think I’ll play a game with Mason,” she said. “He acts tired lately, so I thought I’d try to cheer him up. Now I know how he feels.”

HOW ABOUT YOU?

Are you as sympathetic with others as you should be? Do you pray for them? Think of times you’ve been sick or have had other problems. Try to remember little things people did for you. Give others the same kind of help.

TO MEMORIZE:

He comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort others. When they are troubled, we will be able to give them the same comfort God has given us.
