Almost!
ALMOST!
Read Acts 26:1-3, 27-29.
Ever since Sunday David had been thinking off and on about the pastor’s sermon. He knew he needed to ask Jesus to be his Savior, and he had almost made that decision last Sunday. But right now he had other things on his mind—soccer, for instance. Becoming a Christian could wait.
David shook the thoughts from his mind as he got out of bed. Today was the big day! His team, the Lions, would be playing the Bears, a team from the south side of town, for the city championship. David was the goalie for his team, and he was eager to play.
The coaches had been saying that the two teams were equal in ability, and it soon became obvious that this was true. First the Lions were ahead, then the Bears, then the Lions evened the score with another goal. Unfortunately for David and his teammates, the Bears made a goal in the shoot-out and won the championship.
“That was a good game!” Dad said later.
“But, Dad, we lost!” David protested.
“You still can feel good about it,” Mom said. “Being the second-place team in the city is an honor too!”
“Yeah, David,” his sister agreed. “You almost won!”
“Almost isn’t enough!” David complained.
Dad gave him a thoughtful look. “That’s true, David. Almost isn’t enough—not in winning soccer matches, nor in getting to heaven.”
David was startled. He hadn’t thought about it that way before! He knew he needed to make the decision to become a Christian, and he was almost ready to do it. Now he realized that almost being a Christian wasn’t enough.
