Blessed Assurance

Jesus traveled throughout the region of Galilee, teaching in the synagogues and announcing the Good News about the Kingdom. And he healed every kind of disease and illness. Matthew 4:23

Being a country doctor means I need to travel a bit to see all of my patients. While I no longer make house calls, I still visit three nursing homes, two hospitals, and two clinics.

In the course of my visits, I see a number of familiar diseases—somewhere between thirty and forty—on a regular basis. But occasionally I am caught off guard with a rare disease or a symptom pattern that doesn’t seem to fit. In those cases, I enlist the help of specialists to assist me in diagnosis and treatment.

We often need to coordinate care between a series of specialists who have different interests in the outcome of the patient’s health. Or we may have to coordinate treatment between two separate health-care facilities. For example, someone in a nursing home may need to go to the hospital for surgery. Or someone from a clinic may need to spend time at a rehabilitation hospital until he or she has recovered and can return home. Fortunately, in many parts of the United States, we are blessed with some of the finest specialists and subspecialists in the world.

More than at any time in history, we can predict good outcomes for patients who follow their treatment plans. We have the resources in people, technology, and medication to give a lot of positive prognoses. But even with that, we can’t 100 percent guarantee a specific outcome.

If we want complete assurance about our physical, emotional, or spiritual health . . . well, only Jesus can offer that. He is the only one who has ever been able to heal us completely.

Draw close to the Lord. Not only is he able to heal you, but “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:7, NIV).

Jesus, I offer up to you all that has me feeling unwell today. Please bring strength to my bones and energy to my mind. Thank you for your healing touch.
