Q: Jesus used what two Greek letters to describe himself?

Three times in the book of Revelation, Jesus says he is the Alpha and the Omega. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet, and omega is the last. Jesus isn’t really talking about letters, though. He’s talking about the fact that he has always existed. He was here in the beginning, and he will be here in the end.

In John 1:1, Jesus is called “the Word,” and John tells us, “In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Jesus has always been. That’s hard for us to understand because we are used to things that are created or made, or things that are born and die. But Jesus has always been.

Jesus was there when the world was first created, and nothing exists that he didn’t make. If it’s hard for you to understand that no one made God, and there is no time that God didn’t exist, that’s okay. Our minds aren’t used to working that way, but perhaps one day in heaven God will allow us to understand it.

Jesus is also the beginning of our new life in God. Because Jesus died for our sins and rose again, he can offer us eternal life. John 1:12 says, “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” When we accept Jesus as Savior, we begin a new life as part of God’s family.

Jesus was present at the creation of the world. Everything has its start in him. Your salvation also begins with Jesus. Because of his death on the cross and his resurrection, you are part of God’s family, and when the final showdown between Jesus and Satan takes place, you’ll be on the right team.
