There have been many battles fought in history, and sometimes the images of those battles are depicted in paintings or early photographs. You might have seen one of the many portraits of George Washington riding on his white horse. In one picture he’s holding a sword, as though he’s getting ready for battle. It’s a picture that’s easy to understand. There’s a war being fought, and General Washington is planning to win.

The apostle John was given a clear picture of a battle yet to come. God revealed the future to John by allowing him to see visions. In Revelation 19 heaven opens, and John sees a warrior on a white horse. The battle lines between good and evil have been drawn, and both armies are preparing to meet in battle at Armageddon in the land of Israel. The armies of heaven are riding white horses and are dressed in fine white linen.

As the vision of the battle unfolds, John sees that the enemy has been defeated and the wicked leaders have been thrown into a lake of fire. Satan has been thrown into a bottomless pit. Sin is defeated, and Jesus reigns.

For people who don’t believe in Jesus, the Battle of Armageddon will be a time of death and destruction. But for those who follow Jesus, it will be a time of victory.
