Q: What did God do on the seventh day of Creation?

God did his work of creation in six days, and then he rested. Genesis 2:3 says, “God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation.” Some people refer to this day of rest as the Sabbath.

Did God need to rest? No. He could have created a million more worlds and still kept going, but he chose to declare a day of rest. He probably did this to set an example for us. He knew things would become so busy that people wouldn’t slow down and take time to think about him.

Some people declare Saturday as the Sabbath and worship God then. Others worship on Sunday because Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week. The important thing is to have a day of the week that’s different from the others. This is the day you attend church and maybe spend more time with your family.

That might bring up the question, What about people who have to work on the Sabbath and can’t go to church? People like doctors, police officers, and firefighters are often needed on that day. There is no easy answer to that question, but since God knows people’s hearts—and their schedules—he knows if they take time to honor him, even if it’s not on the day they’d normally go to church.

The important thing is to set aside time to honor God and to gather with other believers one day a week. And honoring God shouldn’t happen just one day a week; it should be an everyday thing.

For You

It’s good to think about God, read your Bible, and pray on the Sabbath. But it’s important to do those same things every day, not just one day a week. God needs people who don’t just go to church, then come home and forget about God the rest of the week. He needs people who will put him first every day. Those are the people he can use to do his work.
