Before the Israelites could defeat Jericho, they had to cross a river. The priest carrying the Ark of the Covenant would go first. The Ark was a visible reminder that God was with the Israelites. The Jordan River was overflowing its banks when the Israelites had to cross, so they had to take a big step of faith. If they stepped in, and God didn’t keep his word to keep them dry, they would be in over their heads!

But God always keeps his word. The river stopped flowing when the priests’ feet touched the edge of the water. The journey out of Egypt started with the parting of the Red Sea and now ended with the parting of the Jordan River.

The Israelites faced the crossing with great excitement, and perhaps some anxiety. They were ready to take the land, and some had waited a long time. Yet there must have been concern about crossing a swollen river. But the priests stepped out in faith, a dry path was formed, and all the Israelites crossed safely.

For You

Sometimes excitement and anxiety go hand in hand. Maybe you’ll move up to middle school next year. You’re excited about the different classes, sports, and clubs you’ll have. At the same time you worry you won’t be able to remember your locker combination or will get lost going to class. That’s normal, and it’s a reminder to look to God for strength and comfort. What situations in your life are causing you both excitement and anxiety?

It was the harvest season, and the Jordan was overflowing its banks. But as soon as the feet of the priests who were carrying the Ark touched the water at the river’s edge, the water above that point began backing up a great distance away at a town called Adam, which is near Zarethan. And the water below that point flowed on to the Dead Sea until the riverbed was dry. Then all the people crossed over near the town of Jericho.   Joshua 3:15-16
