A Reminder of God’s Work

Q: What did God have the people do as a reminder of what he’d done for them?

The people had safely crossed the Jordan River. You might think they’d rush to capture Jericho while the Canaanites were still in awe of how God had parted the river.

That’s not what they did, though. God had them set up a memorial before they proceeded. Joshua told them, “We will use these stones to build a memorial. In the future your children will ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ Then you can tell them, ‘They remind us that the Jordan River stopped flowing when the Ark of the LORD’s Covenant went across.’ These stones will stand as a memorial among the people of Israel forever.”

How do you remember special times? Maybe you have a photo album or scrapbook to remind you of family vacations or holidays or a trophy from the time your team took first place. Do you also have reminders of spiritual milestones and events? If you were dedicated as a baby, your parents may have received a certificate. You might have received a Bible after taking part in believer’s baptism. These, like the stones the Israelites set up, remind you of how God has worked in your life.

For You

The Israelites used standing stones or pillars as memorials so people would ask what God had done there. Did you know you can be a standing stone? Your life is a reminder God is doing something special in you. When people look at you and what you are allowing God to do through you, you are a living testimony of his work.

Tell them, ‘Take twelve stones from the very place where the priests are standing in the middle of the Jordan.
