Saving Rahab

Q: The spies told Rahab she would be safe when the Israelites defeated Jericho if she

• a. left the city.
• b. hung a scarlet cord out her window.
• c. waited for them at the city gate.

Even though Rahab didn’t know God, word of the Israelites had reached Jericho. Rahab knew God was going to give them the land, and she requested safety. She told the spies, “Now swear to me by the LORD that you will be kind to me and my family since I have helped you. Give me some guarantee that when Jericho is conquered, you will let me live, along with my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all their families.”

The spies agreed. They told her, “When we come into the land, you must leave this scarlet rope hanging from the window through which you let us down. And all your family members—your father, mother, brothers, and all your relatives—must be here inside the house.”

The spies escaped down the rope and to safety, and Rahab left the rope in her window. She gathered her family so they would be safe also.

Rahab was a Canaanite who worshiped false gods, yet when she heard about the true God, she believed he was real. Her faith in a God she didn’t know much about kept her safe.

Rahab had more faith than some of the Israelites who knew God and had seen his miracles. She recognized his power while some of God’s own people doubted.
