No Longer Slaves

We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin.

Romans 6:6

SLAVERY WAS ONCE a big issue in the United States and Great Britain. Many people rose up to fight it, and eventually slavery as an institution was terminated in these countries. Today, trafficking in different forms is still practiced throughout the world.

Spiritual slavery is not talked about much, but it’s a far more virulent brand of enslavement. It keeps people from being able to break the power of sin in their lives. They may have addictions, terrible habits, or numerous other ways sin has struck. But they seem powerless to overcome this slavery.

Though people sometimes do overcome the worst kinds of sinful addictions—drugs, alcohol, and sex—many others cannot. Until Jesus comes into their lives. Jesus came to destroy the power of sin. He did just that on the cross. Those who trust and love him will find in him not only a great friend and forgiver but also a source of power and support. God says he will not fail us. In Christ he will enable all of us to defeat sin in our lives now, and we will live without sin in heaven forever.
