Help The Destitute

He will listen to the prayers of the destitute. He will not reject their pleas.

Psalm 102:17

GOD HAS A special place in his heart for hurting, broken people. They often are the most likely to call on God for help because they really have nowhere else to turn.

A woman in India suffered from leprosy. Her family sent her away, and she lived in a colony where only lepers lived. Even the other lepers hated her because of her condition—they were afraid she might make them worse. With no friends anywhere, she wanted to die. But one day she heard about Jesus from a traveling preacher and decided to call on God because that preacher quoted the verse above.

God soon answered her prayer by having a church come out to the colony and offer food and help to the lepers. Several Christians befriended her, and soon she began to attend their services. One day, during testimony time, she stood up. “I have become a Christian, and I thank God for making me a leper because it was only then that I saw my real need. I know I’ll always be a leper in this world. But in the next, I will be clean and perfect. And you people gave me that. Thank you, and thank God.”

This kind of story is repeated over and over in the Christian world. It’s when people get down low that they’re most likely to call on God. His promise is that he hears the prayers of any needy person and will not turn away. Ever.
