Blind Faith

Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.”

John 20:29

MISSOURI IS KNOWN as the “Show-Me” state. Sometime in history, the state got a reputation of having skeptical, stubborn people. Missourians wouldn’t just believe what they were told; they demanded proof before they took someone’s word for matters.

Though many people consider themselves skeptics, they don’t really have a hard time believing in what they haven’t seen. For instance, you might not have seen the North Pole or the South Pole, but you probably still believe they exist. You have faith that people who have mapped out these areas were accurate.

Likewise, we may not see the engine on a plane, but we believe the plane will fly. We don’t ask to see the pilot’s license to prove that he or she is qualified to transport us.

But when it comes to Christianity, normally trusting people often turn skeptical. They demand proof that God exists and that the Bible’s words are true. Like Thomas, who was skeptical of Christ’s resurrection until he saw the wounds in Jesus’ hands and side, they want proof they can see and touch. Actually, it takes more faith to believe in non-Christian gods or man-made answers to spiritual questions—such as the theory of evolution—than it does to believe in Jesus and what the Bible tells us.

Sometimes we have to just believe, whether or not we see or understand all that’s going on, especially in spiritual matters. When we do so, we’ll experience special blessings.
