Being There

[God said,] “I will be your God throughout your lifetime—until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.”

Isaiah 46:4

BABY BOOMERS ARE hitting retirement age and drawing social security. Now they get to learn whether our country’s social services are stable enough to support this vast portion of the population.

Retirement is a scary stage for most people. Very often, company retirement plans have been downsized through the years to save companies money. Investments are often disappointing. And cost of living continues to climb.

Some surveys report that 45 percent of working adults plan to work to seventy years of age or beyond. With people commonly living well into their eighties and above, the savings they tucked away for retirement have to cover many years of basic needs and medical costs, which increase through the years.

So when we look at the whole picture, we find living to old age may be even scarier than those middle years, when we often have other mouths to feed or are climbing in our careers.

This Scripture verse gives us the glorious promise that God will be with us all throughout our lifetimes. He’s there for us during those early years when we’re trying to find out who we are emotionally and spiritually. He’s with us through career building and raising a family. And when our nests are empty and we’re facing retirement, maybe even without a spouse or family, God is with us. He made us. He’ll take care of us.

Don’t fear the future; God is already there, waiting for you.
