A Heart After God

O GOD, I need your help with my heart, since what is in my heart determines what comes out of my mouth.

Jesus said that a person’s heart is like a treasury—a personalized museum of sorts. Father, you know what each room and hallway of my heart looks like. You know exactly what is stored there; the contents often spill out through my words and actions.

In Galatians 5 the apostle Paul points out potential sins we might keep hidden away: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division, envy, drunkenness, and wild living. Those kinds of things are dishonoring to you, destructive to us, and hurtful to people around us. Instead, I want my life to be filled with your love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Cleanse my heart so I will be ready to receive the Holy Spirit’s gifts.

As I turn my heart to you and your Word, Father, please help me to be a good curator of this treasury!
