Think Of Yourself Less
Think Of Yourself Less
Lord, what does true humility look like?
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he and I are one, he did not think of equality with me as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to me and died a criminal’s death on a cross.
Philippians 2:5-8
How can I grow in humility?
Don’t think you are better than you really are. Be honest in your evaluation of yourself, measuring yourself by the faith I have given you. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. I must become greater and greater, and you must become less and less.
Romans 12:3; Philippians 2:3; John 3:30
What can I pray to grow in humility?
When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them? Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you. Bend down, O LORD, and hear my prayer; answer me, for I need your help.
Psalm 8:3-4; Psalm 86:11; Psalm 86:1
C. S. Lewis once said, “If anyone would like to acquire humility, . . . the first step is to realise that one is proud.” Take notice today of how often you think of yourself or try to project a certain image to others. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal when you are thinking too much about yourself. What would it look like for you to become more focused on others?
