The Power Of Words - In the Morning When I Rise
The Power Of Words
Lord, is gossip really that bad?
A tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. And among all the parts of the body, the tongue is a flame of fire. Sometimes it praises me, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in my image. Do not spread slanderous gossip. Rumors are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart. A troublemaker plants seeds of strife; gossip separates the best of friends.
James 3:5-6, 9; Leviticus 19:16; Proverbs 18:8; Proverbs 16:28
How can I talk about others in a way that pleases you?
Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them. And whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus. Judge fairly, and show mercy and kindness to one another. Be tenderhearted, and keep a humble attitude. Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you. Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what I have called you to do, and I will grant you my blessing.
Ephesians 4:29; Colossians 3:17; Zechariah 7:9; 1 Peter 3:8-9
What can I pray when I’m tempted to gossip?
Take control of what I say, O LORD, and guard my lips.
Psalm 141:3
Our words hold great power—even the ones we say behind someone’s back. Words always have consequences, sometimes to others and sometimes to our own hearts. Take time to pray over these questions: Are my words kind, encouraging, true, and necessary? When am I most tempted to gossip? Who am I most tempted to gossip about? Pray over those situations and people right now—asking God to help you control your tongue and change your heart.
