The Importance Of Loyalty To God
The Importance Of Loyalty To God
Lord, what does loyalty to you look like?
Do not make idols of any shape or form. Love me with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. Commit yourself wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you. Come, follow me. If you refuse to take up your cross and follow me, you are not worthy of being mine. If you cling to your life, you will lose it; but if you give up your life for me, you will find it. I protect those who are loyal to me.
Deuteronomy 4:23; Deuteronomy 6:5-6; Matthew 4:19; Matthew 10:38-39; Psalm 31:23
What does disloyalty to you look like?
Idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. They have mouths but cannot speak, and eyes but cannot see. They have ears but cannot hear, and noses but cannot smell. Repent and turn away from your idols. You have abandoned me and turned your back on me. Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin.
Psalm 115:4-6; Ezekiel 14:6; Jeremiah 15:6; Romans 6:12-13
What can I pray to renew my loyalty to you?
I’ve promised it once, and I’ll promise it again: I will obey your righteous regulations. Not to me, O LORD, not to me, but to your name goes all the glory for your unfailing love and faithfulness.
Psalm 119:106; Psalm 115:1
Reflect on the following questions: Are there idols in my life? What am I most devoted to (family, friends, appearance, money, health, security, success, control)? Consider some of the characteristics of idols (speechless, blind, deaf, senseless, unfeeling, directionless, lifeless). The Bible warns that those who trust in idols become just like them. Ask the Holy Spirit to convict you if you are disloyal to God in some area. Pray the prayer above to recommit your loyalty and devotion to God alone.
