How Thoughtful Are You?

How Thoughtful Are You?

Lord, how can I be more aware of the needs of those around me?

Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourself. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. Think of ways to motivate others to acts of love and good works.

1 Corinthians 10:24; Philippians 2:3-4; Hebrews 10:24

How can I cultivate this selfless attitude toward others?

You know the generous grace of your Lord Jesus Christ. Though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty he could make you rich. For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.

2 Corinthians 8:9; Galatians 5:13

What can I pray when I’m feeling selfish?

May I always be full of joy in you, Lord. I say it again—may I rejoice! Let everyone see that I am considerate in all I do.

Philippians 4:4-5

Reflect on the following questions and try to honestly assess how thoughtful you are to those around you. Does it come naturally for you to do good to others, or do you need to work at it? Do you forget birthdays, milestones, or important events in the lives of people who are dear to you? Do you notice when someone looks weary or burdened? Are you aware when someone seems joyful or happy? Do you ask people about their lives, or do you do all the talking? Ask God to open your eyes to see and open your heart to respond to opportunities for practicing thoughtfulness today.
