What Do You Treasure?
Lord, what does idolatry look like in this day and age?
Dear child, keep away from anything that might take my place in your heart. Ever since the world was created, people have clearly seen my invisible qualities—my eternal power and divine nature. Yes, they knew me, but they wouldn’t worship me as God or even give me thanks. Instead, they worshiped idols and served the things I created.

How do I begin to identify the idols in my heart?
Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Don’t store up treasures here on earth. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Come back to me, and I will heal your wayward hearts. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between me and the world.

What can I pray when I need to turn my heart back to you?
Let me worship and bow down. Let me kneel before the LORD my maker. For you, O LORD, are supreme over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.
Psalm 95:6; Psalm 97:9
Loving the gifts of God more than the giver himself is idolatry. It is only when you recognize and acknowledge the idols in your life that you can be set free from them. What things have replaced your desire for God? Confess this to the Lord and take the first step toward receiving his mercy. Repeatedly seeking after God will make him the primary thing your heart desires.
