The Way Up

We want gain without pain; we want the resurrection without going through the grave; we want life without experiencing death; we want a crown without going by way of the Cross. But in God’s economy, the way up is down.

You have grown up in a culture that demands instant gratification. Waiting, especially when persevering through adversity, feels unfair. Your unformed prayers have turned into questions: “God, why would You permit me to suffer when You are all-powerful? Why are You allowing me to agonize without resolution in the middle of this family conflict? Since heaven is my final destination, why can’t I escape my problems and make the trip right now?”

It’s hard for you to understand, but I’m conforming you to the image of My Son. You are growing in spiritual maturity and endurance. Look at His example to learn how to present your body as a living sacrifice. Offer Me your goals, hopes, and dreams, as well as your hurts. Place them in My hands and say, like Job did, “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him” (Job 13:15, NIV). Jesus went to the grave and was resurrected three days later. Don’t quit and don’t be discouraged. The way up is down. You have suffered much. Now look up. Your deliverance will come soon.

Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.
