The Shepherd

As Christians we will sooner or later discover that it is in the valleys of our lives that we find refreshment from God Himself.

You are My sheep, and I am your Shepherd. I have not chosen to call you sheep by accident. You often experience fear, and at times you are timid. Like sheep, you can be stubborn and cling to your mistakes. You require meticulous care and never-ending attention. Your natural tendency is to wander, and you need constant protection and guidance. You are often prone to getting spiritually lost in the dark valleys of your own sin.

But there is good news. I know you by name, and you respond to the gentle nudging of My rod and My staff. You are fed, comforted, and loved. I won’t leave you behind when you’re injured or lost. You’re in a privileged position because My goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life (Psalm 23). Be encouraged with My Word: “He will feed his flock like a shepherd. He will carry the lambs in his arms, holding them close to his heart. He will gently lead the mother sheep with their young” (Isaiah 40:11). Speak these words aloud right now: “The Lord is my Shepherd. I have all I need.”

The LORD is my shepherd; I have all that I need. . . . Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me.
