Servanthood

Being a servant of God is different from being a servant of a human master. A servant of a human master works for his master. God, however, works through His servants.

Authentic servanthood is expressed by sacrificial living. It is a lifestyle of thinking of others before thinking of yourself. It means acting with humility, not arrogance and self-sufficiency. It asks the question “How can I serve?” not “How can I be served?” It requires a temperament that is peace loving, not argumentative. “A servant of the Lord must not quarrel but must be kind to everyone, be able to teach, and be patient with difficult people” (2 Timothy 2:24).

Avoid comparing your service with others. Servanthood is about your sacrifice, not about what someone else is doing. Serve with a glad heart and keep your own faith-fire ignited by staying close to Me. When someone is in need, show generous hospitality. Be alert to the hurts of fellow believers and seek My leading about how to creatively bring hope and comfort to My people. Don’t seek applause for what you’re doing. Paul said, “We don’t go around preaching about ourselves. We preach that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we ourselves are your servants for Jesus’ sake” (2 Corinthians 4:5). I will honor and reward those who faithfully serve Me.

Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant.
